Alias: Fecal culture,Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter

Performed: Daily

Turn Around Time: Preliminary report 24 hours, Final report 72 hours

CPT Codes: 87045, 87046

Performed By: Microbiology Lab

Notes: Includes screening for the most common food-borne pathogens: Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter. If other pathogens are suspected, such as enterohemorrhagic E.coli, Vibrio, or Yersinia enterocolitica, please order specific cultures for each suspected organism. See also Shiga Toxin, Ecoli 0157, Vibrio culture and Yersinia culture.

Clinical Utility: Test is not routinely performed on inpatients after 3 days of admission. New onset of diahrreal illness in such patients is most likely due to other causes, including Clostridium difficile toxin.

Specimen Requirements

Stool Sterile cup 1 gram Room temperature up to 2 hours, or refrigerate Use the stool culture transport device, send at room temperature.
Stool stool transport vial 1 gram Fill vial with stool to the red line on the label. Mix with provided spoon. Shake vial until well mixed. Transport to lab within 96 hours. Do not use tube if the fluid has turned from red to yellow. Room temperature up to 96 hours Room temperature up to 96 hours
