Notes: This is a Laboratory Developed Test.
Clinical Utility: Measurement of certain biochemical parameters are used to determine whether the fluid effusion is a transudate or an exudate. The presence of transudate implies the presence of hydrostatic or colloid pressure disturbance without pleural disease involvement. In contrast, exudate implies infection or a neoplasm causing increased capillary permeability. The following is indicative of exudate effusion: Glucose lower than serum value. The test result should be integrated into the clinical context interpretation.
