General Information

Alias: Abnormal Hemoglobin ID, HGB ID, Hemoglobin Identification, Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Cascade

Performed: Mon-Fri 1st Shift

Turn Around Time: 24 - 72 hrs

CPT Codes: 83020

Performed By: Chemistry

Clinical Utility:

This test aids in the identification and quantitation of both normal adult hemoglobin variants and structurally abnormal hemoglobin variants.  It is not intended for use in patients that are < 6 months of age.  A normal result does not exclude alpha thalassemia and/or rare electophoretically silent hemoglobin/hemolytic disorders.  All results should be correlated with relevant clinical and laboratory data.

Acid Hgb ELP will be performed if S, C, or F hemoglobin variant(s) is identified; first encounter only.
Pathologist referral required if review of the patient chart is necessary for interpretation of results.
If this test is ordered on a patient who is less than 6 months old or if an abnormal hemoglobin other than S, C, or F appears to be present, the testing will be sent to referral lab for hemoglobin identification testing.

Unacceptable Conditions: Clotted specimen
